But CK-4 has a sibling category, FA-4, that a lot of diesel guides skip entirely: FA-4 runs a deliberately lower high-temperature/high-shear viscosity for fuel economy, and it's only appropriate for engines the manufacturer has specifically approved for it. Don't Sell "Long Drain" as a Mileage Number

The two figures that matter most for that decision are TBN (tracking remaining acid-neutralizing reserve) and TAN (tracking acid buildup); as TBN depletes toward TAN, that's the real signal an oil's protective reserve is running low, regardless of what the odometer says. Telling a fleet customer "this product supports longer maintenance planning, but the actual interval should follow oil analysis and OEM recommendations" is a more defensible answer than promising a kilometer figure — and it's the kind of answer that makes a distributor look like they actually understand fleet maintenance, not just inventory.

Selling by Segment, Not by Price List

The pitch changes by customer even when the product doesn't. For logistics fleets, the message is stable supply with batch documents and repeat-order reliability. For construction and mining, it's 15W-40/20W-50 built for heavy load and hot working conditions. For modern fleet workshops asking about CK-4, it's oxidation and soot control specifically, not just "better oil." None of these land as well sent cold in a price list — they land in a conversation about what that specific customer's trucks actually do all day.

What to Confirm Before You Recommend a Product

Customer type and primary vehicles (trucks, buses, construction, mining), whether CK-4 or CI-4 actually fits the application, whether FA-4 is even relevant (only if OEM-approved), and packaging needs (20L pails vs. 200L drums). Get TDS, SDS, and COA before committing to volume, and if a fleet is asking about extended drain intervals, point them toward oil analysis rather than a mileage promise.
